The two letters in a belt code identify the profile, which is defined by the rib pitch — the distance from the centre of one rib to the centre of the next. PK is the automotive standard at a 3.56 mm pitch. PJ, PL and PM are coarser or finer profiles used on other equipment. A belt of the wrong profile will not seat in the pulley grooves even if the rib count and length are right.

What are the four profiles?

They differ by rib pitch, which determines how many ribs fit across a given belt width.

- PJ — rib pitch 2.34 mm. The finest profile. Used on small machinery, appliances and some light equipment.
- PK — rib pitch 3.56 mm. The automotive standard, and the profile of every V-ribbed belt in the Win Store range.
- PL — rib pitch 4.70 mm. Industrial machinery and larger drives.
- PM — rib pitch 9.40 mm. The coarsest, for heavy industrial drives.

How wide is a PK belt of a given rib count?

Multiply the rib count by the 3.56 mm pitch to get the approximate width across the ribs. That gives roughly 10.7 mm for a three-rib belt, 14.2 mm for four ribs, 21.4 mm for six ribs and 24.9 mm for seven. These are working figures for identifying a belt on the bench, not manufacturing tolerances — a PK belt is also about 4.3 mm thick overall, with a rib angle of 40 degrees.

How do I identify the profile on an unmarked belt?

Measure across several ribs rather than one, then divide. Lay a steel rule across the ribbed face, measure the distance spanning a known number of rib centres, and divide by that number. Measuring ten rib pitches and dividing by ten gives a far more accurate figure than trying to measure a single 3.56 mm gap. If the result is close to 3.56 mm you have a PK belt, which is what almost every passenger vehicle uses.

Can a belt of the wrong profile be fitted?

It can be forced on and it will fail quickly. A finer-pitch belt sits high in the grooves with only the rib tips touching, so contact area is tiny and it slips and burns. A coarser-pitch belt cannot seat at all and rides on the pulley lands. In both cases the belt is destroyed within a short distance, and a belt that shreds while running can damage what it is wrapped around. Always match the profile as well as the rib count and length.
